Help! I’m Really Not Photogenic!
One of the things I hear most from my clients is, “I’m really not photogenic”. That usually precedes the next comment, “I don’t really like having my photo taken”.
Right away I think, “Great, I love a challenge!”. Then I wonder, “What pictures are you referring to that makes you think that and who has taken them?”.
If someone snaps a couple of pictures of you and they aren’t very good, that doesn’t say anything about either the subject or the photographer. If someone takes a lot of pictures of you and none of them are very good, you can assume the person just isn’t a very talented portrait photographer!
Is Being Photogenic Really A Thing?
I do think that some people are naturally more photogenic than others. It is hard to describe the magic that can occur when some people step in from of the camera. Some people have a presence that projects very well in to an image. These people are not always considered really great looking, or beautiful, but they have character. They are photogenic because they bring themselves out in front of the camera. They become interesting, engaging and are expressive, and natural. When you see the result of a successful headshot. You will feel like you know the person.
This article is directed towards those people who are faced with the fact that they need a photo done, because their work or business requires it.
A lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea of having their photos taken by a professional photographer. If you are self-conscious to any degree, this cold be your ultimate nightmare! You may even have to go to a studio! That could be bad… Every bit of your self esteem will be put to the test. You may be thinking you should let the photographer know all your flaws so he won’t focus on them. But really, you don’t need to do that!
Let the Photographer Put You at Ease
What I can offer in the way of assurance is, if you are about to have professional photos done, I will help you relax! It’s not like you are going to the dentist! It can be a fun interactive experience. And I can always provide you with a glass of wine!
One of my strengths as a photographer is my personality. I have a way of connecting with people and putting them at their ease. This is really important if someone is nervous. I will also start taking a lot of photos. This helps you get used to the camera and can help you forget about it. When you are feeling more relaxed about the camera, that’s when the magic happens.
The whole photoshoot is a process with the end result being you get a natural looking, great photo for whatever purpose you need.
I generally don’t let people see all the images I have taken, I take too many pictures for that. Often there will be many that are similar so I pick the most expressive ones. You also don’t need photos of yourself blinking or any if you start to speak just as a photo is being taken! You will get a good selection of the ‘best’ photographs, the ones taken when the magic is happening and this selection process is also part of being a professional photographer. If there are candid shots I have taken that I especially like, I will add them to your gallery, even if I know you won’t use them for your final headshot. These can be a great reminder of a fun photoshoot!
